smarthub - Living up to a legacy
The Legrand Radiant and Adorne product lines have been top names in residential wiring device and lighting controls for more than a decade. The Smarthub is the first IOT border router to be added to each product line and needed to stand out from its predecessors while remaining a subtle piece of technology in someone’s home.

Concept Exploration
The main focus of each concept was to develop an intuitive interface for easy product setup and maintenance, maintain aesthetic continuity for each product line, and communicate the technology of the product to the customer.

Concept No. 7 seemed to be the best choice after a few rounds of internal concept validation so I continued to explore different variations of the geometry using Rhino + Grasshopper. I was able to create a definition that controlled surface height and grid density so that I could test which dimensions translated well into physical prototypes.
testing the pattern
Twelve concepts with varying height and density combinations were milled out of ABS plastic for both Radiant and Adorne collections. The material gave an accurate representation of what the final injection molded part would look and feel like whether it was left as molded or painted with a metallic finish. It was important to find the right combination of surface height and pattern density that looked intentional, but was not overbearing next to the devices it would live next to.
