Finding home Improvement solutions for renters and DIY beginners
16 people between the ages of 21-35 were interviewed to find out their level of confidence with tools and what home improvement projects they do at their apartment or condo
interview Insights
Renters rely on their landlord to do major maintenance projects and do not have much freedom to modify their rented space
Renters need to do basic tasks like hang curtain rods, fix a broken toilet handle, assemble IKEA furniture, etc.
Pinterest, Youtube, Google, and Reddit are used to self educate on tools and projects
Many own second hand tools that were given to them
They were not comfortable doing electrical or plumbing jobs
Tools were stored in the basement or garage
They needed basic tools for home improvement and automotive projects
Renters don’t want professional level tools, but they also don’t want cheap tools
personas
the movers
Moving into a new apartment, Felix and Lily are looking for the essential tools that they need to hang pictures and put together furniture.
the fixer
Andrew works on a few home improvement projects at his condo on the weekend, but nothing that involves electrical or plumbing. Most of the aesthetic projects “seem easy enough” to him.
the doctor
Clara doesn’t have much time to fix things, but she likes to keep a few tools around that her Dad gave her. When something needs to be fixed she calls her landlord.
POV Statement
Millennial renters that are interested in personalizing their space, but don't have significant home improvement experience, need an easier way to complete simple home improvement tasks because they feel intimidated by unfamiliar projects and tools

Final concepts
Concept 1: A durable, compact tool kit that comes with essentials for basic projects. The stamped steel housing covered in rip stop fabric is robust and suited for a nomadic lifestyle.
Concept 2: A minimalist, technology driven toolkit. The well finished case is fit to live out in the open and its digital tools can pair with an app to access DIY educational content and other tool features.
